Recognising a concept isn't understanding it
Most engineering material is written for people who already understand it. You read a paragraph about indexes or event loops, it makes sense while you're reading it, and a week later there's nothing there. That isn't a memory problem - it's that text is a poor medium for spatial ideas.
Almost every core concept in this field is really a picture: something moving, something nested, something being looked up. Draw it correctly once and it stops needing to be memorised.

I'm Carl Mills - a Microsoft-certified software engineer, DevOps specialist and cloud architect. I've spent years explaining these ideas to engineers at every level, and the explanations that land are almost never the textbook ones.
