Can DevOps be a first job, or do I need to be a developer first?

Pure entry-level DevOps roles exist but are scarce - most people arrive via 1-2 years in development, IT support or sysadmin work. Realistic entry routes: junior cloud engineer, platform team apprentice, or support engineer with automation duties. The roadmap covers the bridge skills for all of them.

What does a DevOps or cloud engineer earn?

Indicative 2026 ranges: junior cloud roles roughly $85,000-$110,000 US, rising fast with experience. Cloud security specialisation carries a further premium and is the fastest-rising skill in the segment.

Azure or AWS - which cloud should I learn?

Check your local job listings and pick the one that appears most - AWS leads globally, Azure dominates enterprises and UK/European corporates. Concepts (IAM, networking, compute, IaC) transfer almost 1:1, and one cloud deep beats two shallow in every interview.

Do I need Kubernetes to get hired?

For a first role: understand what Kubernetes solves and run one small managed cluster - deep K8s-at-scale experience is a mid/senior expectation learned on the job. Docker fluency, Terraform, CI/CD and one cloud are the junior gate skills; a public repo that deploys a real app with them answers most of the interview.
