Native Kotlin for Android-titled roles - job specs say Kotlin/Compose. Cross-platform is a different (also real) market that suits web developers extending to mobile. Pick based on which listings you want to answer.
Do I still need to learn XML layouts and Java?
Compose-first is correct for learning in 2026, but expect legacy XML and some Java in real codebases - learn to read both. New feature code is Kotlin + Compose almost everywhere.
How important is publishing to the Play Store?
It is the single strongest junior signal: it proves you can finish, handle signing/releases, and respond to real users. One polished published app beats five unfinished repos.
