AI & Data Scientist Roadmap 2026 - interactive flow diagram from learning to hired | Sentido

AI & Data Scientist Roadmap

You answer hard questions with statistics and models - and in 2026 the role has absorbed LLM skills too. Indicative entry salaries $80-110k US; a numerate degree or a genuinely strong portfolio is usually the door key. Statistics depth is what separates you from analysts.

AI & Data Scientist roadmap FAQ

Data scientist vs AI engineer - which should I pick?

AI engineers build products on LLM APIs (software-first, more openings, faster entry). Data scientists model and experiment (statistics-first, often degree-gated). If you love inference and experiments, go DS; if you love shipping, go AI engineer.

How much maths do I actually need?

Working statistics: distributions, hypothesis testing, regression, and enough linear algebra to not fear notation. You need to reason about uncertainty honestly - that is the job - but you do not need to derive backprop by hand for applied roles.

Has GenAI killed classical data science?

No - it moved the goalposts. Companies still need forecasting, causal inference and experimentation; LLMs added new tasks (evals, retrieval quality) rather than replacing the old ones. The 2026 DS who knows both is the most hireable profile.
