Engineering Manager Roadmap

You stop being measured by your code and start being measured by your team. EM is a career change wearing a promotion costume - $140-180k US - and the roadmap is the skills nobody teaches engineers: feedback, delegation, delivery, hiring, and letting go of the keyboard identity.

Engineering Manager roadmap FAQ

How do I become an engineering manager?

The usual door: senior engineer -> tech lead (leading delivery while coding) -> EM when a team needs one. Signal readiness by doing manager-shaped work early: mentoring, running projects, interviewing, unblocking others. Most companies promote EMs from within.

Will I still code as an EM?

A little at first (reviews, small fixes), less over time - and your coding must never be on the critical path. If losing the maker identity sounds unbearable, consider the staff-engineer track instead; it is the parallel senior path without direct reports.

What is the most common new-EM mistake?

Staying the hero: solving technical problems yourself instead of growing people who can. The job is multiplying others - measured in your team's output, growth and retention, not your commits.

What next once the list is green?

Prove it under pressure: take the free Mock Interview, then check your application signals.
