Enough to use what you document: run the API calls, follow your own tutorial, read basic code. Developer-docs roles (the best paid) expect working Git, command-line comfort and API literacy - all learnable, all on this roadmap.
Is technical writing safe from AI?
Drafting is automated; judgement is not. The 2026 role is editor-architect: deciding what needs documenting, verifying accuracy against the real product, structuring information, and using AI for drafts. Writers who refuse the tools are at risk; writers who wield them are more productive and more valued.
How do I build a portfolio with no job?
Document real open-source projects - many have terrible docs and welcome PRs. Three pieces: a quickstart tutorial, an API reference section, and a how-to guide. Merged documentation PRs are proof employers trust.
