Forward Deployed Engineer Roadmap

You are the engineer embedded with the customer - building real solutions on top of a product, inside someone else's data, politics and deadlines. Popularised by Palantir and now everywhere in AI, FDE pays $110-150k US and suits fast generalists who like humans as much as code.

Forward Deployed Engineer roadmap FAQ

What does a forward deployed engineer actually do?

Ship working software at the customer edge: integrate the product with client systems, build glue and custom features, demo weekly, and feed what you learn back to the core team. It is consulting-speed engineering with product leverage - currently the hottest hiring lane in AI companies.

How is FDE different from solutions engineering or consulting?

Solutions engineers primarily demo and scope (pre-sales); consultants deliver projects and leave; FDEs build production software inside the account, often for months, with code as the main artifact. FDE is the most engineering-heavy of the three.

What gets someone hired as an FDE?

Proven shipping speed across the stack, comfort with ambiguity, and client-safe communication. Interviews test practical building (take-homes, live integration tasks) plus behavioural depth - stories of delivering real things for real stakeholders under constraints.
